Experience

I'm lucky enough to have a lifelong career in journalism and creative writing, and even luckier to have had lasting experience teaching students ages 16-24 in subjects such as English Literature, Composition, Research Writing, and Creative Writing. Highlights include: * Several years as both a Graduate and Adjunct Writing Instructor at the University of Florida and Flagler College. During the 2011-2012 school year, I received the Calvin A. VanderWerf Award, UF's highest honor for Graduate Teaching. * A Paid Editorial Fellowship with Esquire Magazine (Hearst Corporation). * Eight undergraduate semesters as a Wildlife Educator and Rehabilitation Specialist, working with students ages 7-21. ______ Each year, I have the chance to meet wonderfully bright students whose feelings about English Language Arts vary from genuine curiosity to apathy to panic. It is my job to help those students realize they can not only be competent and confident in their work, but that they can also feel engaged and excited by the progress and the discoveries they make. I strongly advocate for my students as individuals and enjoy working one-on-one to better tailor lessons to their personal strengths and goals. All work is individualized so that my students and clients seen and understood as the best versions of themselves. I'm also incredibly excited to help high school students decide which colleges can make the most of their efforts, as well as how to gain acceptance to (and financial support for) schools that will keep them happy, healthy, and positive about their futures. In turn, I've worked with students who might, for a variety of reasons, feel they cannot access the education they aspire to and deserve, and their achievements are often the best part of my job. Whatever my students' concerns, passions, or hopes -- what matters most to them is what matters most to me. To read reviews from former students, you can find me listed online through anonymous platforms such as Rate My Professors.
